Amateur radio operators preparing for disaster
/ Training /
Join Alpine Fault Network (AFN) prior to participating in a training net.
Members receive notifications advising times and frequencies of training nets, disaster simulation exercises and (when possible) disaster events.
Carefully read and rehearse the check-in and report scripts before participating.
Refer to the schedule to ascertain when the next training net will be conducted.
Ensure all batteries are fully charged.
Check the LAMP chart to ascertain predicted propogation for the net time you have selected.
If you operate a portable station, choose a park or location where people may gather following a disaster.
Commence listening on the net frequency 5 minutes prior to scheduled commencement.
The NCS (Net Control Station) will call for check-ins from each region of New Zealand starting at Northland and ending with Southland.
When your region is called, say your callsign ONLY using the NATO phonetic alphabet for the suffix only.
Once acknowledged, wait to be called back for your report.
When called back, reply with your station report according to the script.
The NCS will read back your report and provide a signal report for your station.
You are then free to close down your station.
