Prepared for Disaster

The Alpine Fault Network (AFN) is a team of 114 New Zealand volunteer amateur radio operators passionate about disaster relief communications.

AFN is coordinated by amateur radio operator Peter Mott, callsign ZL3PWM.

We prepare for all types of disaster, including earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, storms, floods, wildfires, and nationwide electricity outages.

Because disasters can happen anywhere, amateur radio operators located in all regions of New Zealand are invited to join AFN.

Monthly Exercise

Our team meets “on-air” on the first Sunday of every month to test equipment and hone operating skills.

Participation is open to all New Zealand based amateur radio operators with high frequency (HF) radio equipment and operating “off grid” when calling into the net.

Both permanent base and temporary field stations are encouraged to participate.

We speak with each other in the morning and evening using frequencies assigned to the amateur radio service, and with local communities using PRS (UHF CB) radios.

Operators with equipment capable of exchanging email over amateur radio send test messages in the afternoon.
